Bands in a Rainbow
Rainbow is formed by refraction and total internal reflection of sunlight from many water drops in the atmosphere. Each drop produces all the 7colours, but when we see a rainbow, each colour is seen as a single band. The light that we end up seeing as a rainbow originates from one source (our Sun), and thus it enters each of the raindrops at the same angle. Each of the raindrops reflect and refract light of all seven colors. However, each color comes out of the drop at a angle that is specific for each color, and different from the other colors. We see only the colored light from drops at the specific angle, between us and the direction of light from our Sun (about 42 degrees), for that color. Drops that are at an angle slightly above or below that will reflect light of different color back to us.
